Concealed-Carry Motorcycle Vests: The Complete Buying Guide
A leather vest is the most iconic piece of biker gear there is. It's comfortable, it's practical, and it says a lot about you before you say a word.
But if you carry, a regular vest won't cut it. You need a concealed-carry vest built for the job. So, what actually makes a vest "concealed carry"? And how do you choose between club style, classic and everything in between? Let's break it down.
What is a concealed-carry motorcycle vest?
A concealed-carry vest (often called a CCW or CCP vest) has dedicated interior pockets designed to hold a firearm securely and discreetly. Usually there's one pocket on each side. That way, both left- and right-handed riders can use it.
The best ones look exactly like a normal leather vest from the outside. That's the whole point.
First things first: know your local laws
Before we talk leather, a quick but important note. Concealed-carry laws vary a lot from state to state, and they change. Some states need a permit. Others don't. Some have rules about carrying on a motorcycle specifically.
So check the current laws for every state you'll ride through. A great vest doesn't replace a valid permit.
The key features to look for
Not all CCW vests are equal. Here's what separates a good one from a gimmick.
Dual interior gun pockets
Look for a pocket on each side of the chest. This gives you a choice of carry position and makes the vest work for either hand.
Secure closures
Zippered or snap-closed pockets keep everything in place on bumpy roads. You don't want anything shifting while you lean through a corner.
Quick access
On the flip side, you still need to reach it fast. Many vests use a combination: a zipper plus a snap, or an easy-access opening near the front closure.
Quality leather
Heavier cowhide holds its shape better. That means less printing (where the outline shows through). Thicker leather also gives you more abrasion protection if you go down.
Side laces or adjusters
Adjustable side laces let you fine-tune the fit. That's handy when you're layering in winter and wearing just a tee in summer.

Club style vs classic: what's the difference?
This is the big style decision. Both work great for concealed carry. It just comes down to the look you're after.
Club-style vests
Club-style vests have a straight hem, a clean front and, usually, no collar. Often they close with both a zipper and snaps. The back is a single smooth panel. That makes them the go-to choice if you plan to add patches.

Classic vests
Classic vests often have a shirt collar or snap-down collar, and they close with snaps. They have a slightly more traditional, old-school look. Some feature side laces and braided trim.
Open-neck and dual-closure vests
These sit somewhere in between. You get the club-style clean front but with a dual closure (zipper and snaps). They're very popular right now because they look sharp and stay secure.
Leather types explained
You'll see a few different leather descriptions on product pages. Here's what they mean in practice.
- Premium cowhide: the workhorse. Tough, durable and gets better with age.
- Milled or naked cowhide: softer from day one, with a natural, slightly pebbled grain.
- Distressed leather: pre-aged for a vintage look. It scuffs easily by design, which adds character fast.
- Crazy horse: a waxed, pull-up leather that changes tone where it bends.
How a CCW vest should fit
Fit is extra important when you carry. Too tight, and you'll get printing. Too loose, and the weight swings around while you ride.
Measure your chest
Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. Keep it level. Do it over the shirt you'll usually wear underneath.
Check the brand's chart
Every product page shows the official chart from the brand. Milwaukee Leather, for example, lists chest and back-length measurements for each size on its spec sheet. First MFG shows both body and garment measurements.
Here's the trick: "body" numbers are you. "Garment" numbers are the vest laid flat. So match your chest to the body row.
Think about layers
Do you wear a hoodie or flannel under your vest in the colder months? If so, measure over that layer, or go up one size. Side laces give you a little extra wiggle room too.
Sit on your bike
Once it arrives, try it in the riding position. The vest shouldn't ride up too much at the back, and the pockets shouldn't dig into your ribs when you lean forward.
Adding patches? Read this first
Lots of riders patch their vests. That's great. But remember: once a patch is sewn, glued or ironed on, the vest can't be returned or exchanged.
So wear it around the house first. Check the fit while seated, standing and reaching. Then take it to the patch shop.
Caring for your leather vest
A good leather vest can last decades. Just give it a little attention.
- Wipe off road dust and bugs with a damp cloth after long rides.
- Condition the leather every few months, or more often in hot, dry weather.
- Let it air-dry naturally if it gets soaked. Never use a heater or dryer.
- Store it on a wide hanger, somewhere cool and dry.

Common CCW vest mistakes to avoid
We talk to a lot of riders about vests. And the same few mistakes come up again and again. Here's how to dodge them.
Buying a size too small
Leather does stretch a little over time. But a vest that's tight across the chest on day one will print badly when you carry. So if you're between sizes, size up rather than down.
Ignoring the weight
A loaded pocket adds real weight to one side. Heavier leather and a dual closure keep the vest hanging straight. A thin fashion vest, on the other hand, will sag and pull.
Forgetting about your riding position
Standing up, everything feels fine. Leaning forward over the tank is a different story. That's why the seated test matters so much.
Skipping the holster
Most interior pockets are designed to hold a holstered firearm, not a bare one. A simple pocket holster keeps the trigger guard covered and stops the gun shifting around.
Vests for women riders
Women's vests aren't just smaller men's vests. They're cut differently through the chest, waist and hips. Many also offer side laces for a closer fit. If you're shopping for yourself or a riding partner, use the women's chart on the product page rather than converting from a men's size.
Quick buying checklist
Before you hit add to cart, run through this list:
- Does it have dual interior concealed-carry pockets?
- Are the pockets secure, yet easy to reach?
- Do you prefer club style (patch-friendly) or classic (collared)?
- Have you measured your chest over your usual layer?
- Have you checked the brand's size chart on the product page?
